Bridgehampton Historical Society and Fairview Farm at Mecox Bay

Quattlebaum Foretich Gallery is honored to curate the sculpture gardens at Market Art + Design for the third year in a row. HABITATS is an outdoor installation at both the Bridgehampton Historical Society and the fair’s beautiful new location at Fairview Farm at Mecox Bay. This year’s gardens feature interactive works by Adam Brent, Kevin Cyr, Juan Fontanive and Matthias Neumann.           

Adam Brent’s Drop Landing is a meditative structure with mist and seating. Modular and malleable, this edifice showcases wooden decks with seats, as well as timed bursts of cooling mist.

Kevin Cyr’s Little Tag Along investigates mobility and housing and is an expression of self-reliance. It is a human instinct, for some, to wander or constantly be on the move, always seeking a better, more free existence. Cyr’s Little Tag Along is a full-scale camper sculpture towed by a Raleigh 3-speed bicycle, exploring what it means to be autonomous and an adventurer. The piece can be transported to a desired location, giving people the ability to call anywhere their home.

Juan Fontanive’s Marks reference mark-making by the human body, and are inspired by the mechanics of the stylus-in-hand, and the reach of the hand and body as a whole. They are made by bending steel rod with the kinetic chain of arms and legs outstretched. This action becomes the logic of their dimensions, movement, and quality of line. The lines ultimately become disembodied human marks - imprinted within the larger scene or surroundings they inevitably inhabit. 

Matthias Neumann’s works Corb (basics) and Mies (basics) juxtapose and appropriate two iconic chair designs, Mies Van Der Rohe's Barcelona Chair, and LeCorbusier's LC3 Chair with the most basic of construction elements: 2x4 wood slats. The work is part of an ongoing series of works titled "basics" which reinterprets the essence of design and its material manifestation in the domestic realm.

Adam Brent (b. 1973, Queens, NY) creates sculptural installations that combine architectural and organic elements to explore issues of nature, reflection, interiors and structure. He received his BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 1995 and his MFA in sculpture from Parsons The New School For Design in 2001. His work has been exhibited at The Islip Art Museum, The Bronx Museum for Contemporary Art, The Aldrich Museum For Contemporary Art, The Mattituck Museum, The New Museum’s Festival of Ideas, Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, Artists Space New Haven, Auxiliary Projects, Apex Art, Margaret Thatcher Projects, Gathering of The Tribes, Wave Hill, BRIC Rotunda, Momenta Gallery, The Bronx River Art Center, The New York Department of Transportation’s Urban Art Program, The New York Public Library, and the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale. Brent will have public works exhibited for Jamaica Flux 2016 in Queens, NY. He has attended residences such as Artists In the Marketplace at the Bronx Museum, Emerge at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Arts in Newark, NJ and the DNA artist residency in Provincetown, MA. Brent is also a principle-founding member of the BroLab Collective. His individual and collective work has received critical attention from the Village Voice, L Magazine, The NY Press, Art Critical, The New York Daily News, Architect Magazine, Architizer, Artsy, Art Observed, and the New York Times. Brent serves on the New York City Department of Transportation’s Art Advisory Committee, and currently serves as Program Director; The BFA in Integrated Design at Parsons School For Design.

Kevin Cyr (b. 1976 in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada, grew up in Madawaska, Maine) and received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 2000. His paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations have been exhibited by galleries and museums internationally. His work is included in the permanent collections of La Fondation d’Art Oxylane in Lille, France and the West Collection in Oaks, Pennsylvania. Cyr’s work has been featured in publications such as Desillusion Magazine, Juxtapoz Magazine, Huffington Post and The New York Times.

Juan Fontanive (b. Cleveland, Ohio 1977) was granted the Desmond Preston Drawing Prize in 2004, and in 2006 received an MFA from the Royal College of Art, London. In 2010 he was shortlisted for the Jerwood Painting Prize. He has exhibited at Kinetica Museum (2006), Royal Academy of Art, London (2006), The Royal College of Art, London (2006), Contemporary Art Society, London (2012), The New Museum window, New York (2013), Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, New York (2013), The Centro Cultural Banco Do Brasil, Rio De Janeiro (2015) and the Biennale Internationale Design, Saint-Etienne (2015).

Matthias Neumann (b. 1969, Stuttgart, Germany) was educated as an architect in Germany and moved to New York City in 2000. His work fluctuates between architecture and a wide range of collaborative media that compound sculptural space and social interaction. He was a finalist in the internationally open competition for the World Trade Center Memorial in New York City (2003) and has designed structures for Vik Muniz, Hendershot Gallery, and the Spier Biennial for South African Art (2007), among others. Neumann has exhibited and produced projects for: Galleria HIT, Bratislava, Slovakia (2011); Kunstmeile Krems, Austria (2012); Site:Lab, Grand Rapids, Michigan (2013); and National Museum for Contemporary Art, Bucharest, Romania (2014).
